Domestic Abuse

Domestic Abuse Awareness Training

Telford & Wrekin Council and The Haven Training are working together to provide Domestic Abuse awareness training to individuals, organisations, community groups and volunteers working in the local area.This is being delivered through a series of workshops and training events as follows:

 

Workshops – these will be provided to anyone in the Telford & Wrekin area (volunteers, individuals from community groups, professionals, business representatives) to:

  • Provide an overview of the Domestic Abuse Community Ambassador /Champion Programme.
  • Build an awareness of Domestic Abuse in its different forms and who it affects (all ages, genders, relationships, sexual orientation, minority groups).
  • Learn what will be involved in becoming a Domestic Abuse Community Champion or Workplace Ambassador.
  • Expectations if they decide to sign up.
  • Next steps – this will talk about the Domestic Abuse Awareness training and Champion/Ambassador programmes.

 

Domestic Abuse Awareness training – we are aiming to deliver awareness training to as many people and organisations as possible.  Programme outline:

  • Definitions and an overview of the Domestic Abuse Act.
  • Types of Domestic Abuse.
  • Who does Domestic Abuse affect (all ages, genders, relationships, sexual orientation, minority groups, LBGTQ+, BAME and refugee community, over 55s, those with disabilities and health issues ).
  • Recognising signs of Domestic Abuse.
  • How to support victims / survivors of abuse - local interventions for victims/survivors of abuse.
  • Understanding the barriers victims may face when disclosing Domestic Abuse and accessing support. 
  • Local interventions for victims/survivors of abuse.
  • Resources. 
  • Further training options. 

 

Domestic Abuse Community Champion training – if people want to gain further support skills, knowledge and understanding of Domestic Abuse, and they are individuals, part of a community group or a volunteer they can undertake this training:

  • The three R’s - how to Recognise, Respond and Refer.
  • What is a Community Champion and what you should and shouldn’t do.
  • How to respond to disclosures of Domestic Abuse – communication skills, how to listen, believe, be safe, and support.
  • Where can Community Champions access support for victims/survivors.
  • Case studies – we will be working with survivors who currently work as Champions in local/regional areas.

 

Workplace Ambassador training will follow the awareness training for employers and employees wanting to be able to support their colleagues and team members.  It will cover:

  • The three R’s - how to Recognise, Respond and Refer.
  • The possible indicators that someone is being subjected to Domestic Abuse.
  • The responsibilities of a Workplace Ambassador, Managers/HR and the company.
  • How to respond to disclosures of Domestic Abuse – communication skills, how to listen, believe, be safe, and support.
  • Victim blaming and language matters 
  • Confidentiality, information sharing and recording 
  • Safety planning – in the workplace and beyond.
  • A duty of care for all – how to support victims/survivors and perpetrators in the workplace.
  • Where and how to refer.
  • Case studies – from our specialist support and services and from local work with providers.

 

Following training all Champions and Ambassadors will receive ongoing support through:

 

  • Toolkits and resources.
  • Follow up information on specific topics highlighted in feedback.
  • Monthly online support groups.
  • Access to further training events as needed based on feedback from workshops, training and online support groups.
